During the time called the Dark Ages which lasted about 500 yrs. The Christian church had a strong hold on all areas of society. The priests were very powerful and held considerable influence in the government and the laws of Europe.
The priest's made it a crime for the common people to read the Bible. So if you were caught trying to read the Bible you would be executed. So for 1000 yrs anybody caught reading the Bible could have been, and most of the time was killed.
